The history of Empire of Code starts with CheckiO. CheckiO is our first programming game where players can open new islands on the map by solving puzzles. They also have an opportunity to find the best solution together and exchange experience with other players. After being in the programming area for a couple years we found out that most programming games are not really a “game". They are more like coding challenges with gamification elements, so we decided to find a way to change it.
At the beginning of 2015 we started working on Empire of Code. This programming game was designed on a simple principle: we prioritize game activity over coding. Programming skill gives an additional advantage in the game that you can use at any time, but it is not required to progress in the game.
Players’ programming skill can help while building and upgrading their base. Construction and upgrading buildings requires resources, which can be acquired from their mines or through conquest. Additionally, each building offers upgrades at certain levels in the form of coding challenges. Solving these will grant additional bonuses to that building. These challenges are optional.
Conquering other bases consists of 3 stages: scouting a base to conquer, choosing strategies for the troops, and the battle itself. One part of the game where programming skill is useful, is the strategies; Players can program their own strategy, or acquire other players’ strategies as trophy for winning a battle and modify them to suit their own needs.
